Slate Roofing in Martinsburg, WV
Natural and synthetic slate roof installation and repair by Jade Roofing & Construction, Martinsburg, WV. We work on the historic slate roofs in Shepherdstown, Charles Town, and downtown Frederick, and install DaVinci synthetic slate on homes that want the look without the weight.
Natural Slate: The Hundred-Year Roof
Slate is stone split into tiles and hung on a roof with nails, and a well-laid slate roof outlives the people who put it on. Many of the roofs on German Street in Shepherdstown, around the courthouse in Charles Town, and in downtown Frederick are original slate from the 1800s, and the reason they are still up there is that slate does not rot, burn, or wear out. It fails only when the nails rust, the flashing gives out, or someone who did not know what they were doing walked on it.
We install new natural slate on homes that can carry the weight and repair existing slate roofs the way they were meant to be repaired: matching the stone, using copper or stainless nails and slate hooks, and replacing the flashing that is usually the actual source of the leak. We do not tar over slate, and we do not send a crew up in boots that will crack the tiles next to the one they came to fix.
DaVinci Roofscapes composite slate gives you the look of natural stone at about a quarter of the weight, so it goes on a standard truss roof without structural work. It carries a 50-year manufacturer warranty, resists hail and wind, and is what we recommend for new builds and for homes replacing a worn asphalt roof that want a slate appearance.
Slate Work in Historic Districts
Working on a historic roof in Shepherdstown, Harpers Ferry, or the Frederick historic district means matching what is there. We source Vermont and Pennsylvania slate in the same color and size as the original, lay it with the same headlap and exposure, and rebuild the copper flashing at valleys, chimneys, and dormers where century-old roofs actually leak. The result looks like it was never touched, because that is the point.
For homeowners weighing repair against replacement: most slate roofs we look at are repairable, and a good repair buys decades. We will tell you honestly which yours is. Jade Roofing & Construction is based in Martinsburg, GAF Certified Plus, a licensed Maryland Home Improvement contractor (MHIC #167279), BBB Accredited, and rated 5.0 across 44 Google reviews. Inspections and written estimates are free.
Why Jade for Slate
Slate is unforgiving of shortcuts. Here is how we approach it.
Repair Before Replace
Most slate roofs in our area can be repaired for a fraction of replacement. We replace individual slates, rebuild flashing, and only recommend a new roof when the stone itself is failing.
Matched Stone and Copper
New slates matched to the original in color and size, copper or stainless fasteners, copper flashing at every valley and chimney. Nothing that will rust out in twenty years.
Synthetic Done Right
DaVinci composite slate installed to the manufacturer’s pattern and fastening schedule, with the underlayment and ventilation that keep the 50-year warranty valid.
Common questions about slate roofing
How long does a slate roof last?
Natural slate commonly lasts 75 to 100 years, and hard Vermont slate often longer. The stone outlasts everything around it, so the real lifespan is set by the nails and flashing, which is why repairs focus there. DaVinci synthetic slate carries a 50-year manufacturer warranty.
Can my house support a natural slate roof?
Natural slate weighs roughly 800 to 1,500 pounds per square (100 square feet), several times an asphalt roof. Older homes built for slate usually can. For newer truss-framed homes we recommend synthetic slate or a structural review first. We will tell you which during the inspection.
My slate roof leaks. Does the whole roof need replacing?
Usually not. Slate roofs almost always leak at flashing, at a handful of cracked or slipped slates, or where someone patched with tar. We repair those with matching slate and new copper flashing. Full replacement is only warranted when the slate itself is delaminating across large areas.
Do you work on historic homes in Shepherdstown, Charles Town, or Frederick?
Yes. Slate repair and replacement on older homes is a large part of our slate work, including houses in the Shepherdstown, Charles Town, and Frederick historic districts. We match the original material and detailing so the roof stays appropriate to the house.
What is synthetic slate made of?
DaVinci Roofscapes slate is an engineered polymer molded from real slate, with UV stabilizers and color mixed through the tile. It is lighter than stone, rated for hail and high wind, and installs on a standard roof deck without structural reinforcement.
